Also evident two street gas lamps one outside the Commercial Hotel and the other attached to the Masonic Hotel opposite. The gas lamp outside this hotel also has the Masonic Lodge Emblem (Freemasons) attached to the glass .By the 1860s many towns and cities in New Zealand had some gas street lighting. Lamps were initially installed at strategic places within the towns which were often provided by hotels and bars to attract custom.
