It could be said that for many residents of Havelock and the business entrepreneurs of the day there would have been a love hate relationship of Havelock with the Sound; endless commercial traffic moving up the channel bringing of course so much benefit to so many residents, but the trials and tribulations of tidal mudflats and shallow water, tested them all to every fibre of their being. With continual timber milling, tree stumping and gold mining releasing hillside sediment so that the Pelorus and Kaituna Rivers built up the mudflats in a disastrous fashion right in front of Havelock and the Port.
