Mount Cook - View from the Hooker Valley

Mount Cook - View from the Hooker Valley

Aoraki Mt Cook was known originally to the Māori as Aoraki. It was later renamed to Mt Cook by European settlers. The English name of Mount Cook was given to the mountain in 1851 by Captain John Lort Stokes to honour Captain James Cook who surveyed and circumnavigated the islands of New Zealand in 1770. Captain Cook did not sight the mountain during his exploration. In 1998 the mount was renamed to Aoraki/Mt Cook to incorporate its Māori heritage. The mountain itself is a sky-scraping 3,754 metres tall.
